[[ APOCALYPSE CLOCK - explained ]]

by: Todd Wheatley 07-02-14

Two years after the United States detonated the first ATOMIC BOMB (1947) a regularly published report, the "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists", noted the possibility of nuclear annihilation by means of an arbitrary DOOMSDAY CLOCK. This "clock", shown on the cover of the bulletin, moved closer or further away from MIDNIGHT (doomsday) depending on global tensions. Over the years the bulletin considered scenarios other than nuclear annihilation.

If you check out the DR-KNOW PODCAST section you will find references to the DOOMSDAY CLOCK under the APOCALYPSE tab. The first setting (1947), according to Wikipedia, was 5 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT (11:55 pm). Since that time a panel of very smart people meet twice a year to set the clock, but in today's rapid fire world the infrequent settings and the narrow range render the clock useless.

In a DOOMSDAY CLOCK podcast a panel member addressed the infrequent settings by painting the daily news as an inaccurate emotional barometer. While that may be a accurate assessment some people look through the emotion to gauge how news worthy an event may be. If those folks can't do that, what's the intent of the clock anyway?!

During the early years of the COLD WAR the "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists" helped bring the nuclear threat perspective. Today, the semi-annual settings fail to account for critical events as they happen. More importantly, the clock never addressed the most serious event in human history: the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962.

The DR-KNOW website takes a different approach. It track events in real-time and produces a threat assessment to help people prepare. It's not intended as some commentary toward the general state of the globe. Quite the contrary. It's a hard factual assessment that provides people time to think, plan, and act.

Consider the threats that have emerged since the break up of the Soviet Union. With the end of the COLD WAR we can step back and look at the "big picture". Every day we get closer to the development of AI and the so-called "singularity". Disease outbreaks like bird flu, SARS, and the COVID-19 coronavirus have a biological aspect unseen since the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. The 1929 Stock market Crash and Great Depression followed brought a global dimension to economics, but nowhere near the trouble caused by the 2008 banking crisis. Then there's the newest addition: numerous wild fires (Australia 2019, Western U.S. 2020) have brought global warming into the apocalyptic fray. Not to mention the increased severity of hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones.

Finally, we must revisti the original intent of the "Doomsday Clock" and note that the number of nations with nuclear weapons has increased. If all that isn't enough, there's the potential for cascading space debris to wipe out communications. Solar flares, asteroid collisons, super volcanoes, and more. Any number of things that could end modern civilization and bring on the APOCALYPSE. Over the years since the "clock" was invented the threats have done nothing, but multiply. Instead of a quick nuclear annihilation, mass chaos from one event or another will send modern life into a tailspin. TIME, in that case, becomes an important variable. The longer it takes for an event to unravel the world the more difficult it will be to execute an exit plan. So keep in touch with the DR-KNOW APOCALYPSE CLOCK.
