DRILLING MISHAP - GAS LINE
By: Todd Wheatley
(tiktok video transcript) __
After hitting utilities 2 days in a row I'm reminded that drilling can be hazardous and
potentially deadly. It's also a common thing drillers talk about when they congregate.
Roughly 30 years ago I was logging an environmental monitoring well for the West Dallas
lead abatement Superfund site; I was fairly new to drilling at that time with most of my
early career as a civil engineer - having worked my way downhill I became part of a
three-man drill crew doing mostly manual labor. Then and now I'm the only well educated
well informed person in this line of work and back then one of the few non-smokers that
would be life-saving in this situation.
We had taken our first soil samples so the driller was advancing the augers to the next
strata when all of a sudden he just takes off running ... doesn't say a word ... I just
stood there trying to figure out what was going on ... the helper was totally oblivious
and was about to light a cigarette -- just then I understood the problem and started
running
- we had hit a gas line -- that was the first of many mishaps and incidents that occurred
over more than three decades ----- the fact that the driller didn't say anything never
escapes my wonder
