Geotechnical Drilling : SLIP-RING
By: Todd Wheatley
(tiktok transcript)
The CME75 has a main hoist and an auxiliary hoist -- most of the rigs have also
been modified with a wireline or "sand line" -- it's 27ft from the mast crown to
the ground so there's 25ft of effective hoist height -- the addition of the third
"cable" provides 75ft of lift capacity without "running rod" - although you will
still need to "break" the rod every 25ft -- the SLIP-RING, as shown in this video,
allows you to nearly double the amount of rod you can "trip" in & out of the hole
-- however, due to the added safety concerns, this method is only used by the most
experienced drillers -- as you can see here the drill rod extends above mast putting
pressure on the guide above -- the drillers are now going to lower the drill rod back
into the hole, but without using the "braking" action needed for longer sections of rod
