WASH DRILLING (Part 2)
By: Todd Wheatley
(tiktok transcript)
As you saw in the previous video the process of wash drilling is the same as done
in the oil field - only at a smaller scale -unlike the oil drillers, however, we
seek to recover the rock intact instead of simply chewing it up - to accomplish
that goal we use a specialized core barrel that allows the rock to slide up through
the center as the rod advances - at the start of this video the drillers are breaking
the rock laden inner barrel from the core barrel assembly - the lead driller then
removes the "shoe" from the inner barrel to allow the rock to slide out - if all
goes well, a 5 ft stick of solid rock will emerge - things rarely go well due to
rock fissures and soft layers or any number of complications both in the drilling
process and in the rock formation -in fact it's common for the rock to lodge within
the inner barrel requiring the drillers to fight it loose without damaging the equipment
- in this video you will see the driller bounce the assembly to free the rock core
