MOVIE TIME during COVID

By: Todd Wheatley

As you may have seen in my last post, I recently (11-2-20) tested POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 and became too sick to even watch "TV". In fact I just spent time counting as I inhaled to keep from ruminating over worse outcomes. By Sunday (11-8-20) I had finally gained enough strength to watch TV. So once again I pulled the "Flashforward" series off the shelf. At only 22 total episodes it still took three days to complete.

Marie became ill five days after I was confirmed with Covid. However, to our good fortune, she only ran a low grade fever and never became too ill. That left both us with just enough strength for TV viewing. Essentially locking us into the recliners and the big screen. The three day forced binge session completed both seasons of "Marco Polo" and start the "Medici". Initially we didn't want back-to-back "period movies", but decided on "Medici" after watching only one episode of the futuristic series, "Altered Carbon".

We were pleased that the series "Marco Polo" had great cinematography and a well adapted storyline. It's one we had been waiting on since the DVD was way over priced. We would have waited for the price to drop, but given our illness we selected the COVID OPTION (as so many people have) .... "STREAMING VIDEO". Having amassed an extensive video collection streaming video isn't an option I would normally choose. Though I do like the ability "test run" before buying. Take "Altered Carbon", for example, we would have been stuck watching something less than adequate as we are now doing with series "Angel" and our mealtime viewing, "The Munsters".

In retrospect the past crappy COVID months have shown the promise of streaming video and the workings of the SMART TV. So many choices ..... Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, ect., but it's most disheartening that none of the streaming shows are available on DVD - perhaps some years down the line they will become available. Right now it's just another adjustment among many. Since Marie and I have both been run down with COVID we haven't engaged in our standard TV viewing. Which generally includes a 30-minute mealtime show, a couple of episodes of a major series, and a 15-minute snip-it before lights off.

Before Covid we were 40 episodes into a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off, "Angel". The complete series has 110 episodes and I can't wait to finish. Unlike "Buffy.." which had a surprising amount of humor "Angel" has very little. More importantly the storyline falls flat. The grand villain, for example, is a legal firm (Wolferman & Heart) that up till now still hasn't been given a backstory.

(12-03-20) addendum - the TV series "Angel" improved considerably by the middle of the 3rd season yet still lacks all of the charm delivered by "Buffy...". So far it has taken more than half of the series to develop a good mix of characters. Leaving the show with all support and no center. At roughly 60 episodes in Wolferman & Heart, the main villain, still has no backstory and any that might be added in coming episodes will likely be too little, too late.

Another addendum will follow when we finish this series.
