The City of Richardson became overly involved in my landscaping efforts after I place a low railing in the sidewalk easement. The city engineers took issue with a number of things, but couldn't be persuaded that my water detention / retention efforts were viable and asked for a drainage plan and topographic map. Instead of paying more than $1000 for a survey crew to complete a topographic map, I built my own transit with a $35 rifle scope and an old telescope tripod .... APOCALYPSE 101 tech ....

As a young draftsman and civil engineer I drew several topographic maps. Further as a geotechnical field rep I've done thousands of geotechnical surveys, so just more of the same. No excitement here. EXCEPT! .... the transit worked! Something for doomsday preppers to think about. After all, shit flows down hill and someone has to make sure.
