DFW RAINFALL & LANDSCAPING
By: Todd Wheatley
An old Texas adage claims that a flood always breaks a drought. Oddly the adage seems to hold weight. This was especially true in May 2015 after
a four year heatwave and drought (2011-2014). As the next summer approach North Texas got a record 16" of rainfall in May. Since then May has
typically been very wet. This year NOAA recorded nearly 8" of rainfall for the DFW area for the month of May. That heavy rain extended into the first
week of June. Unfortunately NOAAs "official" numbers tend to be on the low side since the "official" rain gauge resides at DFW airport. Which
is under a massive urban heat dome that dissipates much of the rain. In fact it's very common to see a radar image that looks like Noah parting the
Red Sea. Just as a rain front passes Ft. Worth it will part around the heat dome and reconnect near Rockwall to the east.
Since most strong rain storms typically track west to east a "rain shadow" develops over the centrally located DFW airport. My house is northeast of the
airport. Though not far enough north, nor far enough east to experience the heaviest rains. Given the rains of late and my last post about the city
requesting a drainage plan for my landscaping efforts I am going to look into a rain gauge purchase. However the real reason for this post concerns the
"official" NOAA RAINFALL DATA and a future website upgrade providing links to that data. This link provides the "official"
rainfall totals for the DFW
area.
