The thirty-five year progress of DR-KNOW would have been greatly reduced without the highly varied work schedule of my "day job": GEOTECHNICAL DRILLING ... it used to be geotechnical & environmental drilling, but thankfully I haven't done environmental work in more than twenty years. Regaurdless, the "day" work is outside and subject to vagaries of the weather. Rain is often the source of a schedule disruption. In more recent years, however, technology has given our industry the means to schedule around that typically seasonal obstacle. I have also worked countless days in the rain which makes it much less of a work stopper than you might think.

Mechanical breakdown stands as the most random to derail a work schedule. Even then the pervasiveness of next day parts delivery and hot-shot services has reduced the breakdown worry. This past Monday a glitch with traffic control nearly ended the days work. It seems the state highway doesn't work on federal holidays ... all these years and this is the first timne that has arisen. We still got close to a full day. Today was a confulence of weather and scheduling adjustments. Frigid temperatures pushed in yesterday and dropped well below freesing. Combined with the wind chill, temperatures are in the single digits. As an "hourly" worker, I was given the option to work in a frozen mud pit or take the day off. I told my supervisor I would prefer to freeze in the comfort of my own home.

Given this "random day off" do I brave the freezing weather and work on my nearly completed fence or do I engage my shovel and wheelbarrow in heat producing earthwork. Lest we not forget the comfort of sitting indoors and working on this website. Seems I'm going to take an all the above approach and put on my coveralls after finishing this blog post.
