The Russians have invaded Ukraine on a massive scale. Media photos and reports show tank formations many miles long. Further, given the strength of the Russian military it's highly unlikely the war will last more than a couple of weeks. If that. Given the danger to media personnel TV doesn't do this war justice. Decades ago the U.S. military treated the Russian (Soviet) military as equal. That obviously changed with the end of the Cold War, but the Russians were still very formidable. Definitely an ego boost for a blood-thirsty dictator. In fact, Putin's decision to invade likely hinged on the perceived strength of the Russian military forces .... easy in / easy out; have it wrapped and sent before morning coffee.

Unfortunately for him, instant global communication makes it difficult to mask an egregious land grab. Then again, Putin understands the short attention span of people today. Any short-lived action would be quickly replaced in the media with a developing crisis elsewhere. Many U.S. politicians have engaged in the same calculus over the past six or more years ..... So has Vladimir moved the yardstick in a master stroke as Donald Trump suggests. Or has he gambled his way to infamy.

The answer will be known soon since the human cost hangs in the balance. Right now the fighting has been contained to the Ukraine so the human cost would be far from apocalyptic. Instead it's the long-term repercussions or the short-term miscalculations that portend apocalyptic consequences.So one must consider the chain of events that will lead to a wider conflict. Take North Korea, for example, this morning North Korea fired a ballistic missile. While it might have been only a test, the timing suggest a willingness to skirt International norms similar to Russia. Similarly, this move by Russia could embolden China to use similar tactics with regard to Taiwan.

Yet regardless of the stupid actions by other countries Russia has taken the first step towards nuclear war. This morning Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian nuclear forces are being put on alert. Such a move should have been implied with the decision to invade, but giving it voice adds a heightened level of concern. With the stakes raised the margin of error has been reduced. Acknowledgement of the height requires the clock to be pushed forward 31 minutes into the more active prepping stage: taking inventory.

Two more significant moves will bring us to the 11th hour and proves the value of this service. By comparison, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Doomsday Clock, is nothing more than an academic exercise of no real value. After all, they missed the most significant nuclear event ever: the Cuban Missile Crisis. Nevertheless it's been apparent for many years that events move too quickly for the efficacy of the Atomic Bulletin. In regard to this current crisis, Vladimir Putin certainly wants it to go quickly. Some of his fans in the U.S. are likely praying for a quick Russian victory. The U.S. "money people" may not support Putin, but it looks like they support his vision. The surprisingly large bounce by the U.S. stock market Friday once again shows the disconnect between investors and reality. More than just "buying the dips", they seem to be buying Putin's delusional "master stroke" narrative .... Time will tell .... in the meantime, ADVANCED PREPPERs stay tuned here
