WHAT ARE THE ODDS?
By: Todd Wheatley
As an INFORMATION SPECIALIST, I am a voracious consumer of CURRENT EVENTS. Consequently a
deep understanding of math can enhance the relevance of specific events. A lack of mathematical
understanding, on the other hand, creates the kind of COVID CHAOS we have now. Yet even the
mathematically gifted often find STATISTICS troublesome. The "easier" subject of mathematical
PROBABILITY generally gets reduced to a gut estimation or a rough estimate .... for example, the
odds of winning the MEGA-MILLIONS lottery is roughly 1-in-50 million .... plus or minus 10 million
or so. As odds like those reach into the stratosphere a more devine clarity may appear ......
Three days ago Marie mentions out of the blue .... "That we can get the complete series
of The Munsters for ... x $'s" ; by this time I had stopped listening because it was no big
news. Marie proceeds in ordering the series and tells me it will be delivered the next
day- Nice, but no huge rush. Our meal-time TV viewing slot was already allotted for a couple
weeks while we finish "That 70s Show".
The next day I opened the front door to "work on the lawn". Surprisingly a package had been
delivered without a knock or a doorbell ... it was "The Munsters". After working in the yard
my lunchtime break included a tuna sandwich and a half-hour of "That 70s Show" ... Season 7
episode 15 plus or minus. During this episode the characters are sitting around the dinner
table discussing .... "The Munsters".
Fast forward 24 hours. Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday dinner consisted of dine-out fast food.
So no meal-time sitcom. Afterwards I continue landscaping until dark. When I return inside
Marie is watching "Sleepless In Seattle". It's an odd choice since she had been watching "The
Walking Dead" with only a few episodes to catch up. I had not seen "Sleepless in Seattle" since my
initial viewing more than twenty years ago.
So I watched for several minutes before showering. I returned in time to catch the ending.
When Marie & I retire to the bedroom we generally watch an episode or two of a nighttime TV series.
Currently it's been "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". The complete series had sat on the shelf among the
other two thousand plus movies / TV series. "Buffy.." had been unopened for nearly ten years. At
over 100 episodes it provided nearly three months of viewing with our limited TV viewing. Last
night was season 6 episode 12.
At the very start of the episode Buffy makes an offhanded remark about ...."Sleepless In
Seattle" ... WHAT ARE THE ODDS?? ... Two days, two coincidental references to randomly selected
TV shows. Ironically there's a great quote from the TV series, "LOST" ... "don't mistake
coincidence for providence". Meaning that God isn't trying to give you a message through these
coincidences. Yet as that show goes on the multitude of coincidences had devine purpose.
Perhaps it's a subtle hint for me to stop dragging my feet and finish writing,
"Dirty, Nasty Hell..".

(ADDENDUM 09-19-20 ... Marie & I are again watching "That 70s Show" S8 e1 or 2 - Hyde & Kelso
are about to enter the record store ("Grooves") and the door is locked - Hyde asks,"Why is the
door locked" ... Kelso replies,"I don't know. Maybe it's Rosh Hashanah" .... TODAY IS Rosh Hashanah ....
WHAT ARE THE ODDS?? freaky stuff !!
(ADDENDUM 08-19-20 ... part 3 of this on going strange fest ...
